This collection of pieces is both a feast for the eyes and an enthralling quest for the meaning of art at various times and in a wide range of cultures. Masterpieces by Western artists like Vel zquez, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Matisse, and Fabre are compared with top works from many different periods, places, and cultures. What, for example, links a sixteenth-century triptych by Maarten van Heemskerck with an image of the Buddha made in twelfth-century China? The comparisons produce exciting and unexpected results and show that, however different cultures may seem, the ideas behind them often have an amazing amount in common.
